Israel is the world’s only Jewish state. Israel declared its independence in 1948.
The name "Israel" is rooted in the Hebrew Bible, Genesis 32:28, where Jacob is renamed Israel after successfully wrestling with an angel of God. Over seven million people live in Israel today. The capital is Jerusalem and seat of government. Israel is the only country in the Middle East considered to be a liberal democracy. Also, Israel is considered the most advanced in the region in terms of econimic competition, freedom of press, business regulations and overall human development. The first historical record of the word "Israel" comes from an Egyptian stele documenting military campaigns is dated to approximately 1211 BCE. Jewish tradition holds that the Land of Israel has been a Jewish Holy Land for four thousand years. Israel has been in three main wars since its independence but has had many conflicts.Israel does not have a constitution but does have a set of Basic Laws which there are presently fourteen, intended to form the basis of a future constitution. Most Israelis (males and females) are drafted into the military at the age of 18. Also immigrants sometimes volunteer to join the IDF. There is much speculation regarding the nuclear capabilities of Israel, estimates suggest that the Israeli arsenal may contain as many as 400 nuclear weapons. Tourism in Israel includes a rich variety of historical and religious sites in the Holy Land, as well as modern beach resorts, heritage tourism, archaeological tourism, and ecotourism. Israel has two official languages: Hebrew and Arabic. Hebrew is the major and primary language of the state and is spoken by the majority of the population.

1. Israel is an interesting place. I lived in California for five years, and the differences have been very difficult to adjust to at first. After a short period, living here became just like living anywhere else.
2. Women go to the army because the work they provide is needed. I don't think many of them actually end up on the battlefield (you can check if you'd like,) but they do a tremendous amount of work. Without them the IDF would be much smaller.
Your etymology of the word 'Israel' has been very interesting. I have seen the word in the bible, but didn't realize its use has changed since then.
